Words from the Coordinator

Kia ora koutou katoa,

My name is Andy, and I am the Coordinator for Ellerslie Raise Up Crew.

I grew up in Wellington but I now call Auckland my home. My mum is Māori, my dad Norwegian so I’ve grown up around diverse cultures, and love to spend time with different people of all cultural backgrounds.

I love travelling, collecting sneakers and eating, but since I haven’t been able to travel, lately it has just been sneakers and mostly eating haha. I have given most sports a go, my favourites are basketball, rugby, and martial arts.  Oh, and I also work part-time for AJ Hackett Bungy NZ, so I do enjoy jumping off of things from time to time.

At Ellerslie Raise Up, our goal is to create a whanau environment for our crew. A place where we can help each other develop skills and grow both individually and together. It doesn’t matter where you are from or what your culture is, if you are looking for a place to chill out, play some sports and if you are keen to plan some cool events, whether its sports, fashion (or anything you can think of!), sign on up and don’t forget to tell your mates to sign up too!!

Churr!! :)

What have the Ellerslie Raise Up Crew been up to

Empowering rangatahi nationwide

What started as a social programme where young people put out events and activities for their peers in 2002, has come a long way since then. In its 20th year Raise Up is now a youth development programme focused on the development and growth of young people supported by crews of rangatahi. This year the Raise Up team gears up for the national rollout of Raise Up across Aotearoa.

Disco night - Young people and seniors

The YMCA's youth development programme, Raise Up is always looking for new ways to get involved and help out in the community. One such event was when the Raise Up crew planned a disco night with the seniors in our community. Shreya Badal, the organiser and one of Raise Up's prefects within the Puketapapa crew, shares the story.

Five of the best ways to keep young people safe online

You might feel the easiest solution is to ban your young person from all leisure use of devices or place strict rules around usage; but the most likely outcome of these sorts of ‘helicopter parent’ strategies is to drive your young person underground – they’ll continue to use, they just won’t tell you about it. There are better, trust-focused strategies that are far more likely to keep your young person safe online – Here's our top five ways to help you out.
